PMU is permanent (or semi-permanent) on your face. You're trusting someone to change how you look for years. Pick carefully.
1. Are You Licensed?
California law requires a body art license for PMU. Ask to see it. If they hesitate, walk away.
2. How Many of These Have You Done?
Experience matters. Look for an artist who has done at least 500 of your specific service. Microblading, lip blush, and eyeliner are different skills.
3. Can I See Healed Results?
Fresh results look great on anyone. Healed results (4+ weeks post-procedure) show the artist's real skill. Ask to see healed photos — multiple, not just one.
4. What's Your Aftercare Protocol?
A good artist has a clear, written aftercare plan. If they wave it off ("just be careful"), that's a red flag.
5. What Pigments Do You Use?
Iron-oxide pigments fade to tan — the correct answer. Organic pigments can fade to red or blue. Avoid artists using older formulas.
6. What's the Studio's Hygiene Protocol?
- Fresh needles for every client (sealed, opened in front of you)
- Gloves changed regularly
- Surface sanitization between clients
- Proper biohazard disposal
7. What's Your Touch-Up and Refresh Policy?
Is the 6-week touch-up included? What's the 12-month refresh price? What happens if you hate the result?
Red Flags to Avoid
- Deep discounts. Cheap PMU is expensive — you'll pay more to fix bad work than you'd spend on quality.
- No portfolio or only 2–3 photos
- Pushes you to book immediately
- Works out of their home without licensing
- Can't answer technical questions
- Mocks your questions or concerns
Green Flags
- Clear pricing without pressure
- Honest about expectations (they'll say when PMU won't work for you)
- Offers free consultations
- Provides written aftercare
- Responsive to questions post-appointment
